It's Monday What Are You Reading?

I know, I know its WEDNESDAY. However better late than never right! Night shifts have been the cause of my lateness again! So firstly thanks to Sheila for hosting this weekly meme and let’s get cracking!

Currently Reading

the mystery of mercy close by marian keyes

As this book is quite large I am reading it at home before bed and around the house. Progress is slower than usual however I am enjoying the read.

The Lost are of keeping secrets by Eva Rice

This book is in my bag for work so comes with me practically everywhere and whenever I am on public transport it comes out. Not being that far into it puts me in the position of little opinion so by next Monday I should be able to shed a little more light.

Read

Breakfast at Tiffany's with extra stories by Truman Capote

This book was incredibly short however it was a wonderful read. The review will hopefully be up tomorrow or Friday. There are three extra short stories included in this book of which sub-reviews will be written.

To Read

A Vintage Affair by Isabel Wolff

This book was kindly lent to me by Catherine at Vintage Frills. I hope I can get through this book and give it back to her as soon as possible. Apparently it is a wonderful read.

At some point there will be a re-review of Jenny Colgan’s The Loveliest Chocolate Shop in Paris as it deserves a higher rating that previously written.

Have a great Wednesday!

A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki

a tale for the time being by ruth ozeki

The back of the book says:

Within the pages of this book lies the diary of a girl called Nao. Riding the waves of a tsunami, it is making its way across the ocean. It will change the life of the person who finds it.It might just change yours, too.

My thoughts:

Such a small synopsis leaves such a wide gap ready for the imagination to take over. In a way I hoped that I would feel like my life had changed for reading the book. Written from two perspectives (Nao & Ruth) this book starts by keeping a lot hidden and as you gradually work your way through both perspectives start to link up. Ozeki’s style of writing is anticipatory and I felt like a rabid wolf chasing a meek house cat away from home and into the woods (you will understand this reference when you read the book!).

There are parts of this book where I shed some tears and others where I wanted to scream at the characters for doing nothing to help. Some of the things that happen in the book may sicken you to your core as you read the heartbreaking truths. However Ozeki draws the storyline back and pulls you even deeper into wanting more. Stylishly beautiful.

A book that will truly make you think about your life and not just that of the fictitious beings in the book.  As the author is called Ruth like the main character part of me was slightly confused as to whether this book is in fact fiction. I will leave that for you to decide.

If I had to judge the book by its cover it would definitely be in my pile at the checkout. Eye catching and slightly wistful but overall like Ozeki’s writing beautifully stylish.

One last word about the end of the book – prepare to be surprised as it really is not how I expected it to turn out. Also it may just be me but the last couple of pages got a little bit personal! Spooky but brilliant! It will be a long time before I can try and explain this story to others but at the same time even longer before I can forget it.

Now I know why it is a good idea to take things easy!
